On Calling Editors
Many new writers wonder if they should call an editor to talk about queries or assignments. The short answer to that question is “no”. Most editors don’t have the time to talk with you on the phone and prefer e-mail or snail mail for queries or questions. That way they can answer them as they have time.
On the other hand, if you have been given an assignment and are unclear on something, a phone call may be in order–but let the editor offer when possible. E-mail your question and if they tell you to call, go ahead. If it is something that just can’t wait, you can pick up the phone, but for most other details, getting in touch via e-mail is best. After a while you’ll know which editors don’t mind getting a phone call. Until then, you should probably play it safe and e-mail.
