If you have taken a freelance job or a freelance project and you are struggling to get paid, there are several ways to resolve the issue. Some freelancers who haven’t been paid for part of an ongoing project let the client know they’ll stop working at a specific date and time until the payment issue is resolved. If you take this approach, take our advice–keep it friendly! Don’t be confrontational or angry; instead be cheerful and appear willing to work. But be firm at the same time.

Another approach is to keep working but explain that you’ll have to stop soon unless the pay issues are resolved because you have other clients lining up to work with you. The idea that they could lose you to the competition is a powerful motivator. There are plenty of other ways to resolve the freelance pay problem, but try to keep your negotiations friendly–more often than not you will gain a loyal client if the situation turns out to be one where a good company is just having trouble sorting out their freelance pay system.
