Scheduling A Telephone Interview

Keep in mind that when you are scheduling a telephone interview you will need to know where the person you will be talking to is located. For example, I’m on Central Standard Time (CST), so if I’m interviewing someone on the East coast (EST), I’ll need to clarify if we are doing the interview at 2 pm my time or their time…

It’s embarassing to get this one wrong, and it takes just a minute to find out ahead of time. Build that into your inquiry and you won’t get burned.

The Writer And Contracts

Do you need a contract in order to write an article?

The short answer to that question is no, but in reality it is better for you if you can get one. Contracts spell out all of the terms, and give you a way to stand up for yourself if something should go awry. If you don’t have one, you won’t have much leverage if the publication decides they are going to do things differently than you discussed.

Better to protect yourself if you can.

Broadening Your Horizons

It’s easy to get locked in to the same writing style, the same subject matter and the same word usage. If you broaden your horizons, you allow yourself the opportunity to expand your offering to potential clients.

Try listening to a different radio station, reading different books, reading an alternative newspaper, and experiencing new things to help you diversify.

Take a Break

When you are having trouble with an assignment or other business-related thing, go out and get a cup of joe. Yeah, maybe you already have a whole pot of joe sitting on the counter, or, maybe you don’t like joe…whatever. Just get up and outta your house and get some perspective on whatever is giving you trouble. Chances are it’s not as important as you think it is, and getting away from it will help you realize that.

When you create a portfolio, network, market, query, whatever, your goal is to be appealing to your client. So before you make any decisions or take any action, try to think about how your target client will view it and whether or not it will be appealing to them.

Nichify Your Niche

You probably know that it is easier to find clients, charge decent prices, and establish yourself as an authority when you choose a niche to write in. But did you know you can make your niche even…nichier? For instance, let’s say you are a science writer. What if you instead became an earth science writer? You could take classes, buy books, do some self-study and really become the authority for earth sciences. You also have further narrowed down your target client list making it much easier to find clients and reduce serious competition.
