The Signature Block

If you are like most writers and do a lot of your work via e-mail you should have a signature block. This tool is a text block that can be created to insert itself at the end of every e-mail you send. It should include things such as:

Your full name
Your mailing addy
Your website
Your phone number
Your e-mail addy

E-mail On The Go?

If you are making a living as a writer, missing an e-mail can be a very big deal. You can lose out on an assignment or respond too late to set up an important interview. If you can afford it, consider getting a phone that allows you to check e-mail on the go. That way you’ll never miss another thing.

Idea Folders

In order to keep track of all my ideas, I keep both electronic and physical idea folders. That way, any articles or studies I want to use as sources or inspirations for blog posts and articles are kept in a central location easy to reach when I’m ready to write.

Pets and Writing from Home

This morning I woke to find cat puke in my slipper. Now, as I write this, there is a cat sleeping on my desk between me and my keyboard. These cats are all up in my grill all day–but it’s actually gotten better since I took a few steps to accommodate my cats in my work life:

1. Make a special sleeping place for your cats. I have a cat bed on my desk with a warm lamp pointed at it. Generally, they love this spot and it helps keep them from laying where one of them is right now.

2. Work when they sleep. My cats are indoor cats and they like to play. I schedule my working hours for hours when they are most consistently asleep. That way, I don’t hurt their quality of life by ignoring them when they want play.

3. Keep a regular feeding schedule. If they could, my cats would get me to feed them throughout the day. Instead, we have 2 feeding times and the cats can sense when they are upon us. They come and get me when these feeding times arrive and don’t usually bug me for food in between.

Keeping Finances Straight

As a new writer you may not think twice about depositing a check in your personal bank account, but as you begin to work at this career seriously, it is smart to open a separate account for your writing. Keeping track of both money out and money in can get very confusing once you get rolling, and if you want the IRS to take you seriously (which you do), you’ll need to be able to clearly show both work income and expenses.

In terms of accounting you don’t have to get super fancy…a simple ledger will do. Get in the habit of doing this early on and it will become habit. You’ll thank yourself later on.

But like most things in life, you get what you pay for. Our advice–don’t bother trying to be the lowest bidder. Set the price you are most comfortable working for and let the quality of your samples speak for themselves. Setting the lowest price? Let the amateurs worry about that…you’re a professional.
